I can’t recall a worse feeling than knowing I’d worked too damn hard and yet still lacked my dream body – hell I barely even made progress toward my target weight unless I was engaging in extreme exercise or calorie restriction.

I remember running 15+ miles a week only to dread getting on the scale to see if I’d made any progress.

Week after week the scale barely moved. Minus 1 lb one week, up 1 lb the next – I felt disgusted.

I would blame my lack of progress on “genetics” and then scarf down Pop-Tarts and Rice Krispies Treats that I thought I’d “earned” through exercising.


This cycle of yo-yo dieting went on for over 10 years, with many extended periods of simply ignoring my growing weight problem.

But one day, as I squeezed into my suit before commuting to my 100-hour a week desk job, I realized there had to be a better way. There was simply no way I should be in my mid-20s and be 40 lbs overweight – how overweight would I be when I reached 30? 40??

I hit the books, and the next six months were eye opening. I read everything I could get my hands on related to healthy weight loss.

Six months later I had a firm grasp of the primary cause of overweight and obesity, and surprisingly I didn’t have to do anything super human to lose the majority of my excess pounds – no 500 calories a day diet, no 10 hours a week of intense exercise. I simply learned what makes most people fat, and I consistently did the opposite of that, being patient with myself along the way.

If you’ve tried to lose weight and failed before (like I did for 10+ years), you can still fix your problems.

If you’re not already on a healthy diet and exercise plan that’s allowed you to get close to your target weight, I recommend starting with The Paleo Solution. You don’t have to adopt or believe every single one of his claims to benefit dramatically from the book – there is plenty of helpful information (including specific meal plans and recipes if you’re having difficulty figuring out exactly what to eat).
